Monday Morning Cheat Sheet - December 19th, 2016

  • In 2017, a record of 6 MLB Teams will be paying a luxury tax for their enormous payrolls. The top of the list is the Los Angeles Dodgers who will owe $31.8 million dollars.
  • Jeff Loria, owner of the Miami Marlins, is reportedly looking to sell the team. Loria bought the team in 2002 for $158 million dollars, after selling the Expos for $120 million. The reported asking price is $1.7 Billion. YEAH. THIS GUY, RIGHT?
  • Kenley Jansen and Justin Turner will return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the near future after inking deals on Monday. Both were integral in the Dodgers run to the NLCS in 2016.
  • The Chicago White Sox signed former Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland to a one year deal. This is a bit of a departure from the White Sox style of getting every Top prospect in the Minors, but it's a good move nonetheless.
  • The Baltimore Orioles have pulled their offer off the table for Free Agent Mark Trumbo.
  • The Colorado Rockies officially signed Ian Desmond to a 5-year, $70 million dollar deal. The idea is that Desmond will learn how play first base. Last year Desmond signed a one-year deal with the Rangers and transitioned from Shortstop to Centerfield.
  • Jose Baustista and Edwin Encarnacion both remain on the Free Agent Market. Bautista has been in talks with multiple teams, but all of the reports have included the words "if the price were discounted."
